CHAIRMAN

Mr John Kibatha Njoroge

Mr. Kibatha is the vision carrier of Sumac Microfinance Bank (SMB). He holds an MBA in Strategic Management from the Moi University, and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi. Mr. Njoroge is also a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya [ICPAK].

An accountant by profession, Mr. Njoroge has vast experience in the business world cutting across management consultancy, private practice, the corporate world and entrepreneurship.

A believer in the virtues of hard work, focus and integrity, Mr. Njoroge honed his skills at the Central Glass Industries Limited, a subsidiary of East African Breweries Ltd where he worked for 10 years and rose through the ranks to the position of Finance and Administration Manager before retiring in 2000.

Upon retiring he ventured into private practice and established K Njoroge & Company, a private accounting practice where he is the Managing Partner. It was during this transition that he initiated the formation of Sumac Microfinance Bank.

Board Member

Duncan Mwaniki

Mr. Mwaniki is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Microfinance from the Methodist University in Nairobi. He is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers [ACIB-UK].

Prior to joining Sumac Microfinance Bank as one of the main founders of the bank, he had a long career with Barclays Bank of Kenya where he was deployed to work in key managerial positions in various departments of the bank. He worked in Operations, Finance and Client Relationship Departments before his early retirement in 2004. The last position he held before his retirement was Corporate Manager in the Business Banking department of the Bank.

Together with four other founding members, he is credited with the formation of Sumac Microfinance Bank. He served initially as the Managing Director of Sumac Microfinance Bank Ltd, and equally became part of the Board of Directors in 2004 in his capacity as MD and founder member. His wealth of experience has been crucial in enabling Sumac Microfinance Bank become one of the leading and most profitable microfinance banks in Kenya.

Dr. John M. Mucai

Dr. Mucai holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Nairobi, an MSc in Management & Organizational Development from the United States International University, and a BSc in Information Systems & Technology (Cum Laude) from the same university.

He is also a Certified Public Accountant CPA [K] and holds a Diploma in Cooperative Management from the Cooperative College of Kenya.

He is an expert in business planning and strategic management with more than 30 years of experience in Africa, Europe, and the USA. He was the Business Planning Manager of the West Africa Business Unit of The Coca-Cola Company until his retirement in September 2017. He is currently pursuing various personal entrepreneurial interests.

He is also the author of several books in the MUCAI Quick Read series available on Amazon.com in both Kindle and paperback formats (amazon.com/author/johnmucai).

Stephen M. Chege

Mr. Chege holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi
(LLB(Hons) and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with experience spanning over 30 years. He worked for various Law Firms up until June 1992 when he set up his own Law Firm.

He is currently the Managing Partner of S.M. Chege & Company Advocates.

He is a Member of the Law Society of Kenya, Institute of Certified secretaries (ICS) K and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ACIArb).

Mbugua Muiruri

Mr. Muiruri holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from United States International University (USIU). He is also a Certified Public Accountant CPA [K].

Mr. Muiruri is a financial and accounting consultant, with over 25 years’ experience in accounting, auditing, financial consultancy and taxation affairs. He has provided these services to private, public, multinational companies, NGOs and other donor funded organizations.

He is the Managing Director of Ampen Consultants Ltd. Before venturing into private practice, Mr. Muiruri worked for various companies among them Kenya Credit Traders, Orbit Distributors, and Johnsons Wax (EA) Limited where he was the Finance Manager.

Dr. Rufus Maina Kanyogo

Dr. Kanyogo holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Nairobi. He is a dental surgeon by profession with experience spanning over 15 years in the medical industry.

He is the Director of Procare Dental Services, besides being Chairman of the Kenya Dental Association. He equally holds various board positions in a number of organizations in Kenya.

He is also a director of Kabete Valley View Flats, Hope Homes and Baraka Medical Clinic (Kangemi). He is a member of Kenya Hospital Association and Nairobi Hospital Admitting Hospitals Association. He joined the Board in June 2008.

Chief Executive Officer

John Njihia

Mr. Njihia holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Nairobi, and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the same institution. He is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK).

He is also a member of the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kenya [AMFI-K] Board.

He has been the Chief Executive Officer of Sumac Microfinance Bank since 2015. Prior to this, he was the Finance & Administration Manager at UAP Insurance Rwanda Ltd, Kigali, Rwanda. He was very instrumental in the feasibility study, due diligence, license application and operationalization of UAP Rwanda.

Previously he was the Chief Accountant at UAP Insurance Company Ltd, Nairobi, for five years. Prior to joining UAP Insurance Company Ltd he was the Deputy Divisional Director – Finance & Administration at Eagle Africa Insurance Brokers Ltd. Mr. Njihia is also a director of Sumac Insurance Agency Ltd.

Head of Credit

Benson Chomba

Mr. Chomba holds a Master in Business Administration [Strategic Management Option] from Kenyatta University, and is also a holder of a Bachelor of Agribusiness Management Degree from Egerton University.

As the Head of Credit & Operations at Sumac Microfinance Bank, he holds a wealth of experience in the banking industry spanning over 15 years. Prior to his appointment at Sumac Microfinance Bank, Mr. Chomba worked at the Credit Department at Faulu Microfinance Bank, after serving as the branch manager, Nyeri, for the same institution for two years.

In his successful career, he has worked as a Financial Project Manager – East Africa for SCOPE insight Ltd, and also as a Relationship Manager, Agribusiness – Nairobi and Central Region, for Chase Bank Ltd.

Mr. Chomba also worked for Equity Bank Ltd in his early years of employment as a Branch Manager, Relationship Manager Credit in various branches around the country. His wealth of experience in banking is critical to the successful implementation of Sumac Microfinance Bank’s Strategic Plan.

Head of Finance, Strategy & Administration

Gilbert Wanjohi

Gilbert holds a Master of Business Administration [Finance] from the University of Nairobi.  He also holds a Bachelor of Business Management (Hons) from Moi University and is a Certified Public Accountant CPA-K.

He has written a thesis on “The effect of corporate governance practices on earnings management of companies listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange” published by; European Scientific Journal January 2015 edition vol.11, No.1 ISSN 1857-7881 (print) e-ISSN 1857-7431.

Prior to joining Sumac Microfinance Bank, Gilbert was the Internal Auditor at the National Council of Churches of Kenya (owners of SMEP Microfinance Bank) for 6 years.

Before that he was the Senior Accountant at Fairmont the Norfolk Hotel for 4 years and an Accountant at The Ark Ltd for 2 years.

Internal Audit, Risk & Compliance Manager

Susan Kibocha

Susan is a holder of Master’s Degree in Business Administration [Finance Option] from the Kenyatta University. She is also a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce [Finance Option] from Kabarak University. Susan is equally a professional accountant, having completed CPA [K] successfully during her career. She is a member of ICPAK.

Prior to her elevation, she worked as an accountant for Sumac Microfinance Bank, a position she diligently delivered on for five years. Susan’s career also features a fruitful stint at Roseto Ltd where she worked as an accountant; and a tenure at the Naku Modern Feeds Ltd in a similar
capacity.

Susan has a wide knowledge and experience in Security Analysis, Portfolio Management, Financial Accounting, Principles and Practices of Management, Costing and Management Accounting, Quantitative Techniques, Financial Management and Auditing and Investigation.

Business Development Manager

Eva Wambui Muchina

Eva holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Systems from Copenhagen University, and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Accounting and Marketing from Daystar University.

Eva has a wealth of experience in Banking and Microfinance sector in Business Development role. She has had a successful career spanning several years. Her skills were honed at various banking institutions, such as Kingdom Bank [previously Jamii Bora Bank] where she held different dockets including Regional Manager and Branch Manager, Sidian Bank as Branch Manager and various other key roles in Rafiki Microfinance Bank.

Branch Business & Operations Manager

Phillip Maina Kimani

Mr. Kimani holds a Master of Science Degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovations Management from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He is also a graduate of Egerton University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in statistics.

He is the Branch Business Manager, at Sumac Microfinance Bank, and is in charge of all branches in terms of business and the health of those key business units at the bank.

Prior to his appointment as the Branch Business Manager in 2022, he was the Branch Manager, Koinange Branch, Nairobi. He has previously held the Marketing Manager’s position for the bank since joining Sumac Microfinance, a role he played until late 2020, whilst still handling the branch manager role.

He previously held forte as Branch Manager, Ngara Branch and Githunguri Branch, before moving to Koinange Branch where he worked till his appointment as the Branch Business Manager.

Prior to joining Sumac Microfinance Bank Ltd, Mr. Kimani had worked for Faulu Microfinance Bank in various departments since 2007. Mr. Kimani has vast experience in Microfinance business operations.
